Parents Evening 14/11/18                 Welcome to Cummersdale Primary School

Welcome to Year 5 and 6

We would like to say welcome back and hope that you have had all had an amazing holiday and now refreshed for the year ahead. The children have told us lots of stories of things that they have done over the holidays and what they are looking forward to this year, which for some will be a very important year.

This year the class will be taught by Mrs Wakefield on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and will be supported by Mr Hall. Mrs Scott will teach Thursday and Friday and will be supported by Miss Beardwood.

PE will take place on a Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure children have their PE kit in school on these days. It would be best if the children brought in their kits on a Monday and kept it in school for the week. There are on some occasions times when we may change the day due to special events.

Homework – The children have all been given a new style homework book. This is replacing the reading records in the juniors. Children will be able to write what they are reading and where they are up to in the book on the daily planner side. Please ensure that children are reading frequently at home as this will help their vocabulary to develop. Spellings will also be written in this book for them to learn. These are handed out on a Thursday and will be tested the following Thursday. If for some reason your child is not in school on the Thursday, the spellings will be displayed in the classroom all week; it is there responsibility to put them in their planner. Children will also receive a piece of Maths and English homework each week. Please can you sign your child’s planner each week and we will check on a Monday. Please also feel free to add any comments.

This half term our topic will be Victorians. We will be going on a school trip to Beamish in October (a letter will follow with further details). Children will learn about many aspects of Victorian life including jobs, toys, education and Queen Victoria. In English we will be focussing on ‘Oliver’. This will then lead to a performance of Oliver at Christmas by the juniors.

In the second half term and the lead up to Christmas we will be exploring some crazy Chemistry which we are sure will prove to be explosive!!! We will also carry on some aspects of the Victorian topic with a Dickensian Christmas, looking at and taking part in Victorian traditions.
